Crazy busy times! The past 2 weeks have been insane for work and home and such. No formal exercise, but I've been helping my parents with their new house, so that has been some interesting exercise for me. I've become a real whimp with my arms and things like painting and hanging curtain rods make my arms ache. But it's good for them. I need to get back into shape.
My hand has been swelling quite a bit lately. Next week I'll go see my physical therapst lymphedema expert and try to figure out what's going on. In the meantime, I'm wrapping it with the full wrap at night and wearing the glove during the day.
My parents bought a house in Pickerington, Ohio but will not move from Nebraska for at least a year, probably longer, so we're getting the house ready to rent. If you know of anyone who wants to rent a 3 bedroom/2 bath ranch in Pickerington, let me know!
I'm not strictly doing South Beach anymore but am still watching carbs and maintaining my current weight. I'll start again with trying to lose when things get more under control. I know . . . like that will EVER happen.
Oh babbling blog, motivate me to run and improve myself. Stamp out the demons of inactivity and negative thoughts. Give me strength to recover from breast cancer. And connect me with family and friends who I love.

No diet this weekend
It's getting more difficult to keep on the diet lately. I'm not sure if that's because I'm sick of the foods I can eat or because I stalled and wasn't losing anymore weight anyway.
Yesterday I was totally off the diet since I ate an oatmeal raisin cookie, two rye rolls, a hotdog in a white bun, a smore, a beer, and two little bags of chips. I also ate some pro-diet food, but it was all cancelled out by the bad stuff.
We're at a camp site with Ken's sister and cousin Dave and their families. Today I'm not even trying to do South Beach. I'm also not getting in any exercise. That's ok, though. It's a nice break.
Yesterday at Ken's aunt/uncle's 50th anniversary party, I talked with a family friend who had a single mastectomy a couple of years ago. She wanted to know about reconstruction so we had quite a good chat about it. She might go with the option that uses belly or back tissue instead of implants. She's not sure though. She is from Canada, so we had some interesting discussions on health systems, too. I have great OSU insurance but she still paid a lot less for her doc visits and surgery than we did.
My parents and grandmother are arriving today and might be at our house before we make it back. It will be great to see them.

Swim banquet
Incredibly busy day today and up late tonight packing for a weekend trip. Worked all day and then straight to an all-evening swim team banquet. Val got all kinds of awards tonight including Most Valuable Swimmer for her age group for the season, Swimmer of the Meet for the Championship meet, and recognition for being on the team for 5 years. Both of the kids got their trophies and medals from champs and had lots of fun with their friends. The food was great too.
Day 56 of South Beach Diet
Breakfast: incredible egg and spicy sausage dish at EggFast (breakfast meeting for work)
Lunch: I skipped lunch because of a large, late breakfast
Dinner: pulled pork with no bbq sauce, two different yummy salads, and 2 full sugar desserts that are definitely not on the diet!
I came home after the banquet and mowed the lawn (half of it basically in the dark - that was a challenge). My hand swelled a bit after mowing the lawn. I have no idea why it decided to do that. It hasn't swollen since I was in Nebraska.
I haven't been getting to exercise much lately and I don't foresee opportunities in my immediate future. Although I'm bringing my running stuff on our weekend trip, I doubt I'll get the chance to use it.

Champs swim meet
I was too tired last night to post, so I'm doing it today instead.
Yesterday was my regular day off with the kids (I take Wednesdays off in the summer, Ken takes Mondays and Fridays). I was pretty sore from my weights workout on Tuesday so I was cautious with the run/walk yesterday morning. I walked a mile and then ran two. My miles were 15:59, 10:54, and 10:44. The 5K was 38:55, I think. I stopped off-the-clock for a couple of minutes between each mile to stretch my very tight lower back, in a successful attempt to keep it from cramping.
My progress on losing weight has stalled. I have been eating more carbs lately, but not "bad" carbs and nothing crazy like sweets. I'm okay with this plateau, though. I'm holding steady at 10 pounds below where I was 3 days after surgery. I'm also down a size. Today will be a tough day for the diet since I'll be at the kids' summer championship swim meet from 7am to 8pm or so.
Day 54 of South Beach Diet (yesterday)
Breakfast: hard boiled egg
Snack after run: Atkins energy bar
Lunch: salad with chicken, black beans, guacamole, and hot sauce from Del Mar
Snack: lots of cocoa roasted almonds (way too many) and some soy nuts
Dinner: roasted chicken and ground sirloin mixed with spaghetti sauce, cheese, and mushrooms
Drinks: Powerade Zero, water
Day 55 of South Beach Diet
Breakfast: eggs cooked with mushrooms, asparagus, and cheese
At the swim meet: lots of cocoa roasted almonds, lunchables meat and a little cheese, string cheese, hard boiled egg, V8
Drinks: iced tea, Powerade Zero, G2, and water - it was HOT at the meet today; when I got home I also had more water and a huge glass of skim milk
Val and Jason both did great at the meet today. Both scored points for their team in individual events. Jason was in the fastest heats for everything despite being only 9 in the 9/10 age group. Both kids also improved their times by over a second in each individual event. Val shaved 6 seconds off her IM! Val was clean-up (last swimmer) on the 11/12 girl "A" (fastest) relays and they won both of them. For the medley relay, she chased down and beat the team that was ahead of them. It was very exciting.

Gym workout today
Today was a great "Kelly" day. I worked most of the day, but took off a little early and went to the gym for almost 2 hours. I warmed up on the bike for 15 minutes (a little over 3 miles) and then did weights for an hour. I wrapped it all up with about 25 minutes of stretching.
The weights went a little better today. I used 10's for the benching (20 lbs instead of 15) and did sets of 15 instead of 10. I'm not sure how many I got in, maybe 5 or 6 during the hour. I also did lots of curls, military presses, tricep curls, leg presses, and worked my back, lats, and abs, too. Since I used more weight today (still WELL under what I used to use though), I expect to be more sore than after my first attempt last week.
After the workout, I took a book and went out for a very relaxing and wonderful dinner. Lastly, I attended Steve's father's calling hours and met Steve's wonderful family. Ken attended earlier during the work day with several other colleagues. My friend and colleague, Eunce (the fast walker) was there too and I heard I just missed the VP and AVP of HR. I was grateful that our office showed Steve appreciation and support by our presence.
Day 53 of South Beach Diet
Breakfast: hard boiled egg
Snack: 3 or 4 soy crisps
Lunch: spinach salad with cucumbers, mushrooms, roasted chicken, and hummus as dressing
Dinner: chicken caesar salad and 2 pieces of multigrain bread at La Chatelaine
Drinks: a great red wine (Malbec) with dinner and water

Ran 5K and ate carbs
Tonight I ran a 5K in 34:18. Darn, I was just a little slower than my Race for the Cure on May 11 (that was 34:04). If I had known I was that close, I would have sprinted the last .1 and beat my time. Tonight, my miles were 11:31, 11:25, and 10:19. That's great - I'm finally back to negative splits as I think is best for me.
I followed up the 5K with a 2 mile walk at 16:48 and 18:15 (the last mile included stopping to stretch my calves a couple of times). I would have skipped most of the walk, but I was listening to Steverunner's 5th anniversary Phedippidations podcast and wanted to finish it. My Blackberry player doesn't allow me to exit a podcast and go directly back to where I left off. If I shut it down, I'd have to find my place again manually. The Blackberry folks could learn something from the folks who make my Sanza clip. Those people know MP3 players.
I felt pretty good for the run tonight. I started out much slower than I've been doing lately and I decided after 4 minutes that I didn't really feel like doing the run-walk-run thing tonight. I've been wanting to be able to run the 5K distance post-surgery, just to prove to myself that I can. Also now I officially qualify for the Galloway training method since he asserts that if you can run 3 miles, you can use his marathon training method.
However, I'm not training for a marathon. Well, I don't think I am. I'm training for a January half marathon in 2012. My friend Becky wants to do the all-female half marathon at Disney in 2012 and in a moment of pure insanity, I said I'd do it with her. She's in much better shape than I, of course, and does triathlons and such, but hey, I've done a half before, right? Of course that was before cancer and two surgeries and lymphedema, and loss of muscle mass and confidence. But I did successfully train for and run the half distance. I even did it in sub 2:30 which I didn't dream was possible. So, Disney being a place for dreams and all . . . .
Today didn't start as well as it ended. I was soooooo tired this morning. I had to drag myself out of bed, had no energy, and was most definitely in a Monday sort of mood. I knew this was not good for anyone who came in contact with me, or for my desire to continue employment. So I decided to eat some carbs today. I didn't have much time this morning, so I ate the left over soy cracker things at work since they had both carbs and protein. I also ate a piece of rye toast at lunch - and drank some caffeinated iced tea. I think it really helped. I ended up getting more energy and salvaged the day. Who knows? That may be a factor in me running the 5K without walking today. See, Mindy, I am learning a little about this "food is fuel" thing - thanks for the mentoring!
Day 52 of South Beach Diet
Breakfast: Hard boiled egg
Snack: soy sweet snacks
Lunch: omelet with sausage, black beans, avocados, and cheese and - get this - a big piece of rye toast
Snack: more soy sweet snacks
Dinner: I ate half a plate of veggies at a swim team pasta party for the kids' summer championship meet on Thursday. It's more of a tradition than an actual carb-loading event, but the kids like the idea of loading up on the energy. I would have eaten more if there had been ANYTHING else there I could eat. Oh, and I pulled a few pepperoni's out of one pasta salad and had my tiny meat course.
By the time I got home from the swim team event, it was 8:30pm and I needed to get changed and out for my run immediately. As it was, I didn't beat the dark or the mosquitoes and didn't get back until 10pm or so. Now it doesn't seem prudent to eat a real dinner at 11pm. Maybe a little skim milk to coat my stomach, a quick leg stretch, and get right to bed. I need more sleep and hope to get to work early tomorrow to prep for a day of meetings.

Great weekend, though not diet friendly
Not a great day for the weight loss/exercise quest. I've been starving all day, so eating lots. I didn't get out to exercise in the morning, so I figured I'd go out after the heat of the day, but it's been a significant thunderstorm since we got home at 6:30.
Oh well, it's been a good weekend anyway. We had lots of "down time" and we got quite a bit done too. I finished my book. We went shopping and did some house work, too. Although we still have a long way to go to get this house clean. I've decided it will never happen.
Day 51 of South Beach Diet
Breakfast: V8
Lunch: eggs cooked with mushrooms, asparagus, and cheese
Snack: Atkins energy bar and a million cocoa roasted almonds
Dinner: a small spinach salad with lots of cucumbers, a few mushrooms, roasted chicken, and hummus as dressing
Snack: a million more cocoa roasted almonds
Drinks: 2 Sprite Zero, water, and Powerade Zero mixed half and half with water
As I write this at 10pm, I'm still hungry and want something else. Pizza maybe. No, I won't eat pizza.
My left index and middle fingers are swollen today. I need to make an appointment with my lymphedema physical therapist right away. Although I'm not sure she can do much to help. It seems to be something that no one can do anything about. She'll do the massage thing and try to drain it, but it's not like the results are dramatic or obvious or anything. She may also measure me to order a personalized glove. But do I really want to be measured with the swelling up like this? I don't think so.

Date night
It was hot today. I overheated while trying to run, so I think I walked more than I actually ran today. I put in the 5K at 38:40 and the miles were 11:49, 12:40, and 12:59. My pace was all over the place - as low as sub-8:00 and a as high as 20:00. When I ran, I was probably in the high 9's pace most of the time. Toward the end I was only running in the sun and then walking slowly in the longer shaded areas.
Day 50 of South Beach Diet
Breakfast: tablepoon of natural peanut butter and a full glass of skim milk
Lunch: 4 pieces of cold corned beef (made in the crock pot yesterday)
Snack: a piece of string cheese and a baby cucumber
Dinner: Ken and I went out to eat with Becky and David tonight. We were at Shane's Rib Shack and the salads didn't look good, so I got the half rack of ribs. Since I have about a half-rack, I figured that made sense. I know . . . boooooo. Anyway, I had that and a teeny tiny salad and green beans.
Snack: Afterward, Ken and I went to Claddagh Irish pub and I ate some corned beef & cabbage rolls inerts (not the fried outsides) and had 2 martinis.
Drinks: the martinis, iced tea, water, and powerade zero
Both kids are at sleep overs tonight, so it was a date night for us. Very fun to hang out with our friends and then get some time on our own.

No softball, just practice
We didn't have a softball game tonight because the other team didn't have enough women and forfeited. Bummer. I guess the other women were afraid of me coming back. Ha. Not possible.
Although we didn't have a game, we stayed and practiced a little. I didn't have any trouble swinging the bat and had many good hits in batting practice. My throwing is pitiful, however. I can't throw half as far as I used to throw. It's depressing. I'm also more afraid of the ball. What's that about?
Day 49 of South Beach Diet
Breakfast: two eggs over medium and a V8
Lunch: spinach salad with cucumbers, mushrooms, and roasted chicken; spicy hummus for dressing; I also had a serving or two of some soy sweet snacks, they aren't actually on the diet, but they weren't too bad off-track
Dinner: Well, I didn't really have dinner in the traditional sense; I ate junk all night. Before softball I had 2 teaspoonfuls of natural peanut butter, a teaspoon of fat free refried beans, and a teaspoon of ground sirloin. After we got home and I mowed the lawn, I had salmon mixed with lowfat cheese, a handful of nuts, and two healthy choice fudge bars.
I know I eat much worse when I don't have a sit-down, sensible meal. Today I didn't eat too far off the diet, but I ate too much of the "borderline" foods and just too much food altogether. Not a great diet day.
Two colleagues and friends of mine had major losses this week. Steve's father passed away today and Brent's step father-in-law died earlier this week. My heart goes out to them both. I'll be at the funeral tomorrow in support of Brent , Sheryl, and their family.

Sore and slow
I was a little sore today from the weight workout yesterday. It wasn't annoying enough to warrant taking ibuprofen or anything like that. However, I REALLY noticed it when I tried to play a little volleyball and softball/baseball catch with the kids and Ken tonight. Owwww! I loosened up eventually, but my throwing arm tired very early and my right pec was especially sore and tired.
My finger swelled quite a bit while we were outside playing tonight, too. I didn't have it wrapped. It was 87 degrees and sunny. I guess my finger dislikes the heat as much as the rest of me. The lymphedema is always worse when it's hot.
I seriously thought about not walking/running tonight after playing ball with the family. When we came in it was dusk and still 83 degrees. However, I downloaded the newest Steverunner Intervals and Phedippidations episodes (Where are you Geek Girl Runner? I miss you!) and set out for an abbreviated version of cardio exercise.
I decided to go easy on myself tonight and did a 2/1 run/walk ratio. I started with a slow 2 minute run and then a 1 minute walk and repeated the pattern until I hit the 5K mark. My miles were 12:11, 11:26, and 11:58. The 5K was 36:23 and afterward I walked .36 trying to cool down, but not succeeding in that endeavor. It was 81 degrees when I got back after 45 minutes in the humidity. I looked like I went swimming instead of running. Shiny and dripping. Lovely.
I'm glad I got out there and exercised, though. Now I need to stretch and cool down and shower. Whew!
When I went out to run, I wrapped just my finger in a stretchy wrap to give it tighter support than the big wrap provides. The rest of my hand wasn't swollen, so I hoped the targeted coverage would be enough. It was. The rest of my hand didn't swell and the finger went down quite a bit when I just checked it.
Day 48 of South Beach Diet
Breakfast: scrambled eggs (less than 2) and a V8
Snack: soy nuts
Lunch: cold cuts at a work retreat, along with lettuce, cheese, and a little red onion
Snack: a small piece of salami
Dinner: hamburger with no bun, added cheese and black bean salsa
Drinks: water, 2 mugs of black tea, 1/2 a Diet Coke
Hey, if you've got a minute and a Facebook account, go out and vote for Steverunner's essay at http://bourdainmediumraw.com/essays/view/76.

Weights workout
I went to RPAC (OSU gym) and worked out today while the kids were at swim team practice. I started with the stationary bike for 10 minutes (2 miles) and then went to the free weight area. There, I decided to start very, very easy.
Years ago, about 6 months after Jason was born, I started sharing a personal trainer with 4 other women. I was 30 pounds overweight and looking for something to make a difference. Swimming hadn't helped. Anyway, I learned quickly that I was strong. Well, my upper body was strong. I could out-lift the other women in any upper body exercise, especially bench press. When we started bench press, some women had to use an alternate bar because the 40 lb bar was too heavy. I used the 40 lb bar and put weights on it. Throughout the 5 years I worked out with the group, I worked up to benching 105 pounds.
I know all that is water under the bridge, but I shared it in this post because it really puts today into context. I didn't go near the bench press with the real bar today, but I took some tiny free weights, 5 lbs each, and did a bench press with them. Yes, 10 pounds. After 10 reps, it felt weird. My pec muscles tightened and were crampy. My pecs have been sheltered from lifting or significant work since the doctor cut them to put in the expander (November). Also, they are no longer flat against my chest wall, but curvy on top of my implants. The result is a totally different experience with the bench press. I had a similar feeling when trying to swim breaststroke (what used to be my best stroke) in Nebraska.
After the depressing benching attempt, I did several other exercises and came back to bench press several times throughout the workout. Toward the end, I was using the 7.5 weights (so a 15 pound bench press), and was able to do reps of 10, but it felt very uncomfortable and like my pecs were cramping.
Hmmmm, from 105 pounds to 15. That's a scary thought, isn't it? Even if I take into account that prior to the mastectomy I might have only been able to bench 80 pounds (which is likely), it still is a major drop from 80 to 15 pounds.
The rest of the weights workout was okay. I didn't push myself much and kept to very small weights, exercise balls, and medicine balls. I also used the leg press machine, the row machine, and finished up with some stretching. I'm able to do more yoga positions now that I'm allowed to use my arms and chest again. The workout was about 90 minutes so I decided not to run or walk today.
Day 47 of South Beach Diet
Breakfast: 2 eggs over-medium
Lunch: spinach salad with cucumbers and roasted chicken; spicy hummus for dressing (yes, again)
Snack: soy nuts
Dinner: tuna with a little Miracle whip, an avocado, and some cheese
Dessert: Ricota cheese/cocoa dessert (diet friendly)
Drinks: water all day
Oh, and the best news from today - I've lost the weight I gained over vacation. Yea! So I'm about 10 pounds down from where I was the Friday after surgery (May 28).

Ran 2.5 and walked 2.7
Today was another really busy day at work but I had a few hours at the end of the day and stayed a little later than usual so I was able to get lots of work done. I also organized even more work to complete tomorrow. I'm feeling much better about that.
I also got some exercise today. It was tough to force myself out there, but I had the perfect time and excuse to do it because Val had evening swim practice from 7:30-9pm. So I took her there, parked at the pool, and headed out for my run.
I felt very slow and sluggish and I really wanted to walk instead of run, but I decided to run. The Garmin is set to calculate full miles, so it's an incentive to start off doing whatever I'm planning and to keep it up for at least the first mile. So I ran. Slowly. I was over a 12 minute pace initially, but I picked it up and felt pretty good when I hit the mile mark in 11:11. The second mile was a little tougher and I knew my endurance was mostly spent. I ran 2.5 miles but then I had to stop. I thought about toughing it out and finishing the 5K running, but my lower back was cramped on both sides and I had a sore shin/ankle area starting to act up. I decided the .6 miles wasn't worth getting injured so I stopped to stretch (off the clock for a few minutes) and then walked the rest of the time that Val was at practice.
Overall, I ran and walked 5.3 miles today in 1:13:53. My miles were 11:11, 11:22, 11:52, 16:30, and 17:13. My 5K was 35:35.
Day 46 of South Beach Diet
Breakfast: a 5.5 oz V8 and a few bites of left over roasted chicken
Lunch: spinach salad with cucumbers and roasted chicken; spicy hummus for dressing (I was REALLY good at lunch because we had a lunch meeting with free Adriaticos pizza and salad, but I didn't partake. I brought my own lunch from home and ate it and nothing else. Now I know I'm committed - or just crazy.)
Snack: string cheese
Dinner: hamburger without the bun, melted shredded cheese, black bean salsa
Drinks: 2 mugs of iced tea with splenda, a can of Diet Coke, and water; I didn't have enough water at work though, most of it was while running and afterward

Back to the rat race
No exercise again today. Thunderstorms before work. Then I worked all day (ate lunch at my desk) and went straight to a swim meet after work. We got home at 10:40pm. Now it's dark and wet outside. And I'm tired.
I only had to officiate about half of the swim meet tonight because there were plenty of officials (an unusual situation). I was bored because I didn't bring my book (rain issues) and my kids only swam two events (the maximum allowed because we are a large team). All relays were cancelled due to an hour thunder delay. At least 3 times tonight, I was seconds away from eating anti-diet food from the concession stand or the kids' snack bags. Boredom and accessible junk food are a dangerous combination.
Day 45 of South Beach Diet
Breakfast: turkey lunch meat
Lunch: spinach salad with roasted chicken on top; spicy hummus for dressing
Snack: soy nuts and string cheese
Dinner: pulled chicken with no bun at the swim meet (no pizza, brownies, chips, candy, or other bad stuff that was calling to me)
Drinks: water, mint hot tea (2 mugs), and a Diet Coke
It was a busy day at work and it looks like it will be challenging all this week and next. So I started to write about all I had to do and how my back-to-back meetings made it tough to get work done. But then I thought, "hey, that's pretty normal for me" and I know that I always find a way to get the most important work done. If I whine about it, those of you who don't know me at work will think I'm in over my head. I'm not. I'm just sulking about being back from vacation.
So things are very busy at work right now. However, the kids' softball and baseball seasons have ended and we have much more evening time free. Whew! That's a relief! Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights look pretty good this week.
If the weather holds out, I'm joining Ken in playing on our co-rec softball team on Friday night. I thought I was out for the season due to surgery, but we had several rain-outs and the season is extended a bit. Since I'm cleared to start sports again and Matt (our coach/manager) says they need me this week, I guess I'm back. I assume I'll be playing second base as usual. How ironic.

Home Sweet Home
We're back from Nebraska and tired. I didn't sleep well in the hotel room - the fan was running all the time and yet I was alternating between hot and cold. We were at breakfast by 7:15am (6:15 Ohio time) and then off to the airport.
With all the traveling and getting ready for the week, I didn't get a walk or run in today.
Day 44 of South Beach Diet
Breakfast: eggs, ham, peanut butter on a spoon
Snack: peanuts on the plane
Lunch: calzone in Chicago (Midway) - diet buster item
Snack: pretzels on the second plane - diet buster item
Dinner: cheeseburger without the bun and cauliflower
Drinks: Sprite Zero, hot tea, and water
I'm feeling really heavy and bloated and icky. I hope it's just that I'm tired. Although I know I gained a few pounds on vacation. We'll see what happens with my exercise and diet as I get back in the swing of crazy life again.

Off to Omaha
We headed back to Omaha today to stay the night. Our plane leaves in the morning and then vacation will be over. Boo hoo. Bummer. Oh well, it has been a wonderful time.
This morning I did the 3 minutes run /1 minute walk method again for a 5K. It was a struggle and both my wind and my legs were tired. Before I went out, my ankle was acting up, but while running/walking it didn't hurt at all. I did the 5K in 35:22. The miles were 11:04, 11:29, and 11:55. Evidently, I'm going out too fast or going too far, or both, because I'm wearing out significantly at about half way.
Day 43 of South Beach Diet
Breakfast: V8 (5.5 oz)
Snack: almonds and peanuts
Lunch: spinach salad with chicken and guacamole
Snack: healthy smoothie from Holcomb's Pharmacy - skim milk, double whey protein, ice, and sugar-free chocolate syrup
Dinner: chicken tortilla soup (no chips) and a trip to the salad bar at Ruby Tuesdays
Drinks: water, iced tea, Sprite Zero, and an apple martini with a slice of green apple - YUM!
After dinner, Mom and I went for about a mile walk on a paved path behind the hotel. It was a beautiful night.

River walk and Run-walk-run
I did a better run-walk-run attempt this morning. I ran 3 minutes and counted the blocks (5) and then walked a minute and counted the blocks (1). I continued at that ratio for 4 miles, which I finished in 45 minutes. The 5K was 35:20 and the miles were 10:45, 11:22, 11:49, and 11:18. I'm not very consistent with my pace yet. I ran much easier in the shade. The sun was brutal.
On May 15, my Race for the Cure 5K time was 34:04 and I ran the whole thing, so I still have some work to do to get back to that level of fitness. Also, I wasn't spent after that race and I went back and ran more with Val and Michelle and then walked/ran the last half of the race again with Jason. I feel like I'm doing really well right now, but compared to May, I guess not. Then again, I've only been allowed to run for 4 days, I guess I should be a bit more patient. Walking consistently for 6 weeks makes me feel like I've been running much longer than just 4 days, so it's a skewed perception issue, I'm sure. And a patience issue. I have no patience and I get bored doing the same thing all the time. I'm sure that's why I'm not a very consistent and accomplished runner even though I've been dabbling in running for 5 years.
Day 42 of South Beach Diet
Breakfast: hard boiled egg and a small glass of milk
Lunch: spinach salad with cucumbers, mushroom, zucchini, a whole avocado, and chicken (no dressing)
Snack: soy nuts
Dinner: spinach and romaine taco salad with a little ground beef, and lots of guacamole and black beans; also I ate a little dip with cheese, refried beans, and salsa (no chips, just dip)
Drinks: water, iced tea
This afternoon, we went to Crams Cove and walked in the river. We got quite a workout trying to walk upstream in waist-high+ fast water. The smaller kids wouldn't have made it without Grandpa keeping them with us. He had to help Val and I get re-started a couple of times too. I got stuck in the sand and couldn't get moving again, so he gave me the handle end of a plastic paddle and I did football churning legs and ran my way out and got some momentum again. It was rough going for about 15 minutes or so but then it was very shallow once we got out on the sandbar areas.

Val's a stud
The big sports news in our family today is that Val smoked the high school boys in long course swim practice. In the set of 5 200's, Val beat everyone on the team every time. She also recovered very quickly and everyone else was breathing heavily and working hard. The coach was razzing the teenage boys that a girl beat them, so they were pushing themselves to keep up. That just made Val swim harder too. It was good for everyone, I'm sure. The coach thanked Val for pushing the team. She'll probably go to practice tomorrow too.
I didn't have much time to exercise today, so I decided to get a 5K in faster than yesterday. I fast-walked most of the first mile and then ran 4 blocks and walked 1 for the rest of the run. I did the 5K in 38:52 and my miles were 14:38, 11:45, and 11:29.
Day 41 of South Beach Diet - well, not such a diet today
Breakfast: an avocado
Lunch: Subway spinach salad with cucumbers, banana peppers, and tuna
Snack: Amigos crisp meat burrito and hot salsa - yes, deep fried food (this is the junk food from college that I always have to eat when I come to Nebraska - but I only had one this trip and no greasy chips and cheese that I usually get to go with it)
Dinner: Valentinos buffet food - I ate a large salad that was diet-friendly, some pizza without the crust that was diet questionable, and some junk food that is definitely NOT on the diet, including small tastes of different types of dessert
Drinks: water, iced tea
My had had been swelling more here in Nebraska, but yesterday I wore the full arm wrap thing when I ran and the finger sleeves beyond that. Because the swelling was down quite a bit, last night I only wore a finger sleeve on one finger (instead of the glove as I usually do). This morning all was looking good. I wrapped the whole thing again this morning for the run and kept it on 20 minutes after running. It took awhile to cool down. The sun was pretty brutal again this morning. It wasn't a crazy hot temperature like in Ohio now (only upper 70s), but the sun is brighter here for some reason. I think it's the lack of clouds and humidity - nothing to block the rays.
I've gained about 3 pounds on vacation which is a bummer. I haven't really been eating that poorly. For only 3 or 4 meals, I had something not on the diet, and then not much terrible stuff until today. Also, I've been very consistent with exercise.
We spent much of the day in Kearney and met my cousin's new baby - she's a cutie. This evening, we saw a theatre company perform You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown in an outdoor theatre venue. What a great day/evening!

Ran most of 2 miles
I ran and walked today. I did 3.7 miles in 49:57. The miles were 17:45, 10:11, and 11:13. I walked to the high school track and then ran 1.5 miles. During the last .5 mile, I took 2 walk breaks for a minute each. Then I walked back to my parents' house.
If you are thinking that I'm doing Galloway's run-walk-run method because I walked during the run . . . then I know you didn't follow the links and read much about the method. Just adding walking during the run doesn't qualaify as following the Galloway method. I haven't done enough research to fully understand the method but I think it requires timed miles and probably other assessments before determining the walk/run ratio. Waiting until I'm tired before I walk is NOT part of the method. As a matter of fact, if I actually follow it, I should never get too tired to run anymore during any planned training run.
Steverunner is giving this method a try and he is running 4 minutes and walking 1, so his ratio is 4/1. I assume mine is 3/1 or maybe less at this point. I need to get the book Training Programs to learn the method and figure out my own plan. I might also do some research on Galloway's web site to figure out what I can learn. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a training group in Columbus. The nearest is Cincinnati, but I'm not driving 90 minutes to run.
Day 40 of the South Beach Diet
Breakfast: about 4 bites of Jason's left over meat-lovers omelet
Lunch: cheeseburger with no bun, romaine and spinach salad with a little blue cheese dressing, and some dip of cheese, no-fat refried beans, and salsa (I put it on the burger)
Dinner: Ken and I drove to Grand Island to eat at Uncle Ed's Steakhouse. I had a small rib eye, veggies, salad with blue cheese dressing, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream with raspberry and chocolate sauce.
Drinks: G2 mixed with water, Sprite Zero, and water

Donut, nap, and a RUN!
The countdown turned out to as much of a countdown to the diet busting day as to running.
I ate 3 breakfasts. Only the first one was diet-friendly. We got up at at 6:15am to take the kids to swimming and I had a V8 and a hard boiled egg. After swimming, at 8:15, we went downtown to the cafe and had breakfast again because we figured others would still be sleeping at home. I had a western omelet and 1 and a half pieces of wheat toast. Toast. Bread. But that wasn't worst part. We went next door to pick up donuts to take home to the others. I remember the Bow Bakery as the home of the most wonderful donuts in the world. It was. Unfortunately, they went out of business, but I wondered if maybe their recipes were being used by the new place. So I ordered a long john and ate a quarter of it when we got home. It was close to, but not quite the legendary long john of my youth.
Then I was way too full to run or walk, so I went down to our room to read a little. The book wasn't great and I was sleepy and I ended up taking a 2 hour nap. Hmmmm. I guess I didn't have a stellar diet-friendly day. A donut and a nap.
I made up for it this afternoon, though. Michelle called and we went out walking in the intense sun, seeking shade as often as possible. We walked 3.69 miles in 1:05. Our miles were 17:12, 18:09, and 18:18. It was hot, but it was a wonderful walk and a great time for Michelle and I to reconnect minus the husbands. Yes, our husbands are beyond great, but it's nice to have some "us" time occasionally too. Thanks, Michelle!
Afterward, I went to my parents' house and felt like I really needed to run . . . mostly because of the hype I created with the countdown and all. So I ran 1 mile in the relentless sun. If I hadn't been pressed for time and if the sun hadn't been so tough on me, I could have run another mile, if not more. I guess this walking thing has really helped with my endurance. After a break from running after my first surgery, I couldn't run anywhere near a mile. Today it really wasn't difficult at all. I ran the mile in 10:18 and I listened to music - my 2009 Race for the Cure playlist.
Day 39 of South Beach Diet
Breakfast 1: hard boiled egg and V8
Breakfast 2: western omelet at Betty's cafe and 1.5 pieces of toast
Breakfast 3: 1/4 of a long john donut
Lunch at 2pm: side salad with spinach and cucumber and a little Thousand Island dressing
Dinner: Steak on a salad
Drinks: hot tea, water, vodka and Sprite Zero

Swimming laps
This morning I did an almost carbon copy workout of yesterday. I walked 3.61 miles in 51:21. The 5K was 43:21 and my miles were 15:11, 13:20, and 13:49.
After lunch, we went to the pool and I did a second workout. I swam laps. Wow. I haven't done any swimming since last summer - pre-cancer and pre-surgeries. I used to have much more upper body strength than most women, especially for my age. After the surgeries and reconstruction process which restricted me from lifting anything heavier than a gallon of milk for 7 months, well . . . I'm a weakling. I used to swim just a couple of times a year and I could still jump in and swim a mile anytime I felt like it. I wasn't fast, but I could switch strokes when muscles became tired and I could just go and go.
Today swimming 500 meters was tough. I will be sore tomorrow, too I'm sure. Breaststroke was particularly difficult. The first 100 was okay. Then I did a 100 of freestyle and started breaststroke again after the turn. I only got about 25 meters when I realized my pecs were not happy about it. I finished that 50 (I was swimming long course) and then did backstroke on the way back. I found backstroke wasn't too easy either. Overall, I ended up doing 75 meters of breast, 50 of back, and the rest was freestyle.
So today I learned I can swim, which is great news. Of course, I can't swim like I did pre-cancer, but that is to be expected. I need to work on the following:
Backstroke: arm/shoulder/pec flexibility
Breaststroke: pec strength and endurance
Freestyle: tricep strength and endurance
I didn't even try the butterfly. I couldn't do it well before the surgeries and I'm fine with giving up that stroke for life.
Day 38 of South Beach Diet
Breakfast: hard boiled egg and a shot of skim milk
Lunch: romaine and spinach salad with cucumbers, rib eye steak, black beans, and a dressing of sour cream and salsa
Snack: smoothie with whey protein, sugar-free chocolate flavor, skim milk, and ice after swimming; later also had some soy nuts
Dinner: grilled chicken and grilled veggies (green, red, and yellow peppers, mushrooms, onions, and zucchini)
Drinks: water, iced tea
Tomorrow I'll officially be able to run - 6 weeks post-surgery. Also, I'm cleared to begin lifting weights and things heavier than a gallon of milk. I'm considering how I'll build up some upper body strength safely. The James Cancer Center programming group doesn't have a class related to weight training. Maybe I'll talk with my plastic surgery group to see if they can refer me to a physical therapist or personal trainer with experience related to rehab. If anyone has advice on this, let me know.

Happy 4th of July!
Mindy, so sorry to disappoint . . . . I didn't wear the Diva dress to the reunion. I did wear a different sleeveless dress though. It wasn't as low cut as the Diva option.
The countdown to my official "ok to run" date is flying along now. It's July 4th - Happy Independence Day, USA. On July 6, I'm supposed to be able to run. Of course, I've been doing some light run/walking occasionally in the last couple of weeks.
I've been listening to the Extra Mile Experiment which is delving into the John Galloway run-walk-run method for training for a marathon. I don't know that I'm planning to ever run a marathon. Maybe someday. Not this fall. But I may start considering the run-walk-run method to get back into shape and then increase distance. However, I'm worried that I'll get back in the craziness of life and not be able to exercise almost daily. I really think it makes a difference to be more consistent though. I think it's better for me to walk daily than to run 3 days a week.
I did an unstructured walk-run today for a 5K at 43:20. I walked more than I ran and my miles were 14:42, 13:32, and 14:00. It was a great day to be out with the temperature in the 70s F, a light wind, and mostly cloudy.
Yesterday and today were not great diet days. Yesterday I probably ate twice as much as I needed to eat for breakfast and dinner. I also had some sweet alcoholic drinks. Today was not much better with more of the incredible taco food and a potluck party in the evening.
Day 37 of South Beach Diet
Breakfast: I didn't get up early enough for breakfast today. By the time I was showered and around, it was time to fix lunch.
Lunch: left over taco food from last night; I had a plate of fat free refried beans, lettuce, black beans, guacamole, cheese, and chicken
Snack: an avocado
Dinner: We attended a house-warming potluck party for a family friend, so it was hit or miss for the diet. I didn't eat anything blatantly sabotaging like dessert or bread, but I had a spoonful of german potato salad and some baked beans made by soaking beans, etc. Neither of those items was okay on the diet, but had to try them anyway because of who made them and how they were made. I also had a little pork, a hamburger with no bun, two dill pickles, some coleslaw, and two deviled eggs.
Drinks: water, iced tea and 2 amaretto/Sprite Zero drinks
The fireworks were great tonight. We watched them from the deck at the new house and it was the perfect location. We also stayed afterward and watched the fireworks set off in the street by the teens who attended the party.

Reunion
This weekend in my 25th high school reunion. None of us look that old, of course.
Last night we just had an informal meet-up at a local bar/restaurant. Things started a little slow, but then the crowd picked up and a karaoke DJ came in so we ended up having a great time singing songs from our youth, dancing, and just catching up.
This morning, I got up early so I could get a walk in before the breakfast. One of our classmates owns Betty's City Cafe here and we met for breakfast at 9:30. I was up at 7:30 and walked a 5K in 48:00. My miles were 15:19, 15:42, and 15:24.
Today we went to an all-class luncheon and heard the community choir. Several of our teachers were in the choir and the director was our band director (still teaching after 40 years) who is a close family friend. It was a great group and I'm glad we were there to hear them. We also helped Michelle and James figure out some of the last minute party arrangements and set up. We're using my Blackberry Sirrus app to play the 80's station at the party tonight. We're also helping cater the event. It's a mexican food (tacos, burritos, etc) buffet and we made the guacamole, spanish rice, and a HUGE fruit salad.
Tonight is the primary reunion party and it's BYOB. I don't know what drink to bring for me. I tried red wine at the Friday night party but didn't even finish a whole glass. It just didn't taste good to me. Saturday night, Ken got me a southern comfort and diet coke and I drank it over about 2 hours. He got me another one and I took a few sips and decided I just didn't want it. It was sweet and syrup-y and . . . ick. I decided I'd rather have diet 7-up straight up. I think maybe I'll stop and get some amaretto and take Sprite Zero. Then I can try one with a little amaretto in it and if I don't like it, I can switch to just the Sprite Zero.
Day 36 of South Beach Diet
Breakfast: 5.5 oz V8 before exercising and a western omelet with sausage and veggies afterward. I also had my first taste of bread in a long time. I ate most of half a piece of buttered wheat toast with the omelet.
Lunch: pulled pork and a little coleslaw at the luncheon
Snack: a few black beans, 3 little pieces of watermelon as I sliced it for fruit salad, and a couple of teaspoons of homemade salsa that I made before mixing it in the guacamole
Dinner: all the great taco stuff at the party including guacamole, black beans, spicy chicken, lettuce, etc. No tortillas, chips, or fruit salad, though. The food was fabulous. I ate two helpings - more than I should have -but all stuff that was diet friendly.
Drinks: water all day, iced tea, and 2 Sprite Zero with amaretto at the party, one glass of chocolate red wine before bed

Galloway run-walk-run?
How great it is to have no schedule and just be able to go out and exercise without feeling like I should be somewhere else. And it was also wonderful to have no time constraints!
Today I logged a 10K in 1:32:33. I walked most all of it, but found it was actually easier on me to jog the more significant down-hill sections (less jarring on my legs and I assume less bouncing too). My miles were 15:13, 14:56, 14:59, 14:33, 14:27, and 15:19. The 14 minute times included occassional jogging. My legs were tired and my IT bands were tight when I finished, but I didn't have any limiting soreness or tightness while walking/running. Since I had quite of bit of the Lymphedema swelling in my hand yesterday, I wore the full finger/forearm wrap thing while I was out today. Now I've just got a finger sleeve on the index finger that manifests 80% of the swelling problem.
I've listened to The Extra Mile Podcast while running the last couple of times. Actually, I'm listening to the Extra Mile Podcast Experiment which is an in-depth look at the Jeff Galloway run-walk-run method. Today I listened as a 73 year old man explained how he uses this method and is able to keep running injury free for decades. Most of the talk is geared toward marathons, but they mention halfs and 10Ks (and ultras!) occassionally, too. I'm seriously thinking of getting one of the Galloway books. Or contacting a running coach who can do all the calculations and such so all I have to do is run/walk as I'm told and log the miles/times somewhere like buckeyeoutdoors or even just here in my blog.
Day 35 of South Beach Diet - fabulous food today!
Breakfast: hard boiled egg
Lunch: wonderful omelet made by Mom - 2 eggs, fresh mushroom, fresh spinach, and a little bacon and cheese
Snack: healthy smoothie with skim milk, ice, whey protein, and sugerless dark chocolate
Dinner: Nebraska Rib Eye steak, Oh my. Incredible. Also, grilled veggies (mushrooms, onions, zuccini, and red and yellow bell peppers. Also incredible. A few almonds for dessert.
Drinks: water all day, 1 diet coke and southern comfort drink at the reunion party at Huckleberry's, 1 diet 7-up

Nebraska
We're in Nebraska! The travel was uneventful, which is always good. We picked up our SUV in Omaha and drove to St. Paul and visited with my grandmother for about an hour and a half. She looked great, had lots of energy, and even fed the kids and Ken brownies and ice cream. It was such a great visit. I wished we could have spent more time, but we really wanted to get to Broken Bow by dinner time. Hopefully, Grandma will come and stay with us sometime next week in Bow so we get more time to visit and get to play cribbage, too.
I didn't get a walk in today due to all the travel. My finger/hand swelled quite a bit from the plane. I only wore the glove but I should have wrapped it with the whole initial 3 step wrap thing. I will do that on the way home. I spent the drive to St. Paul, time at Grandmas, and the time driving to Bow doing the massage process to try to siphon the liquid out of my hand. The kids and Ken helped too. We got it down significantly, thank goodness. So it's pretty much back to normal.
Day 34 of South Beach Diet
Breakfast: 3 mini spinach quiches
Lunch: the roast beef out of 2 Arby's regular roast beef sandwiches
Snack: almonds
Dinner: cheeseburger with no bun, spinach salad with hard boiled egg, and bacon (no dressing), and a few pickles
Snack: a few soy nuts
Drink: water all day, 1 Sprite Zero, 1 glass of red wine
Tonight after dinner we met our close friends, Michelle and Jim (classmates) and many local friends we have rung in the new year with for a couple years. It was really a great evening - what a fun group! Tomorrow night is the informal class reunion meet-up. Then on Saturday we have the more organized event. Lee Ann and the kids will arrive tomorrow evening. Good times!

Wednesday
I didn't have time to walk yesterday, but I did it anyway. I walked 5K in 47:35 with the miles at 15:33, 15:32, and 15:00.
Day 33 of South Beach Diet:
Breakfast: turkey lunch meat and a V8
Lunch: ground sirloin with no fat refried beans, low fat cheese, and some salsa
Dinner: hotdog with no bun (at swim meet), pepperoni, cheddar cheese squares
Snack: 2 healthy choice fudge bars, 2 tbl spoons of natural peanut butter
Drinks: water all day, 1 Sprite Zero
A busy day full of preparing for vacation, taking kids to volleyball and baseball camp, and a swim meet. Somehow we got it all done by 1am. Whew!
